But we can find this preposition accompanying verbs where against is not used. For instance: attacking, hitting, throwing, etc).<\/p>\n<h2><em>&#8211; To express against in a physical and figurative sense:<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>Ejemplo: <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Javier estaba apoyado contra la pared. (Javier was leaning against the wall.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Estoy contra el maltrato de animales. (I am against the animal abuse.)<\/p>\n<p>Lanz\u00f3 un vaso contra la pared. (I threw a glass at the wall.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cDe\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>de= of, from (These are the nearest equivalent in English but you can\u2019t expect it to work always as there are a wide range of \u201cde\u201d where \u201cof\u201d and \u201cfrom\u201d won\u2019t be enough).<\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To indicate possession:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>La casa de mis padres. (My parents\u2019 house.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To indicate origin:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Soy de Madrid. (I am from Madrid.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mis amigos son de Manchester. (My friends are from Manchester.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To introduce a subject:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Es una pel\u00edcula de terror. (It is a horror movie.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>El examen es de gram\u00e1tica. (the exam is about grammar.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To show a material is made of\/from:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><\/p>\n<p>La mesa es de madera. (the table is made from wood.)<\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To indicate price and to show quantity approximately (with mas\/menos (more\/less)):<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Tengo unos pantalones de 60 euros. (I have a 60 euros pants.)<\/p>\n<p>Mi abuelo tienes m\u00e1s de 70 a\u00f1os. (My granddad is more than 70 years old.)<\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To express superlatives \u201cin the\u2026\u201d:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Esta es la canci\u00f3n m\u00e1s bonita de la historia. (This is the most beautiful song ever.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To show position:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>El Bar de la plaza es muy bueno. (The Bar in the place is very good.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Me duele la rodilla de la pierna derecha. (The knee of my right leg hurts.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; To show de way someone is dressing, especially the color:<\/p>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Los hombres de negro. (Man in black.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To say \u201cyou are welcome\u201d after thanks:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Gracias por el regalo. (Thanks for the gift.) &#8211; De nada. (you are welcome.)<\/p>\n<h3>In some set time expressions (de fiesta, de d\u00eda\/noche, de copas) and adverbial phrases to indicate manner (de pie, de prisa, de paso):<\/h3>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Estoy de fiesta con mis amigos. (I am having fun with my friends.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Siempre estudio mejor de d\u00eda. (I study better during the day.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>El s\u00e1bado vamos de copas. (Next Saturday we are going for a drink.) <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He visto todo el partido de pie. (I have seen the whole match upstanding,)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cDesde\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>desde= since, from (We can translate \u201cdesde\u201d as \u201cfrom\u201d but it is not going to be correct always. It will be \u201cfrom\u201d when talking about space or distance to indicate the starting point. In many cases we will use \u201cdesde\u201d doing the function of \u201csince\u201d to indicate the inception or starting point of a period of time or space as well. Let\u2019s see this with examples).<\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; Showing a starting point in time or space:<\/h2>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No he ido a Espa\u00f1a desde 2010. (I have not gone to Spain since 2010.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Desde mis casa a la tuya hay 3 millas. (there is 3 miles from my place to yours.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; In the phrase \u201cdesde\u2026hasta\u201d (from\u2026to)<\/p>\n<p><i>Ejemplo:<\/i><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Trabajo desde las 8 hasta las 5. (I work from 8 to 5.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cDurante\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>durante= during (This word denotes a particular period of time in the sense of \u201cwhile\u201d, specially to indicate when something has been done)<\/p>\n<h2>&#8211; To indicate the period of time when the action of the verb happens:<\/h2>\n<p>Ejemplo:<\/p>\n<p>La ciudad es m\u00e1s peligrosa durante la noche. (The city is more dangerous during the night.)<\/p>\n<p>Hay incendios durante el verano.
