{"id":907,"date":"2011-08-03T16:09:10","date_gmt":"2011-08-03T15:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.school-e.co.uk\/blog\/?p=907"},"modified":"2018-10-14T09:49:25","modified_gmt":"2018-10-14T08:49:25","slug":"spanish-interrogatives-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.school-e.co.uk\/blog\/spanish-interrogatives-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish Interrogatives &#8211; Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Interrogatives, &#8220;interrogativos&#8221; in Spanish are words used to ask questions to get an specific information from the subject who is asked.<\/h1>\n<h2>These are the main interrogatives in Spanish:<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Qu\u00e9 (What)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; C\u00f3mo (How)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Cu\u00e1l \/ Cuales (Which)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; D\u00f3nde (Where)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Cuando (When)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Cu\u00e1nto \/ Cu\u00e1nta \/ Cu\u00e1ntos \/ Cu\u00e1ntas (How much \/ How many)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Qui\u00e9n \/ Qui\u00e9nes (Who)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Por qu\u00e9 (Why)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Para qu\u00e9 (For what)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most of the cases you will be able to use the interrogatives above to ask in the same way you do in English, but there is a important difference in the way we ask in Spanish, this is the word order.<\/p>\n<p>In English, the word order in interrogative sentences is normally inverted respect the affirmations.<\/p>\n<h3>Meaning that the verb usually comes before the subject. However, word order is quite free in Spanish existing even regional differences.<\/h3>\n<p>This could seem to add difficulty to the business but it does not because you can ask using the same structure that you do when you build a positive sentence and make the difference by changing the intonation.<\/p>\n<p>There is another important thing that maybe you have noticed already, the questions marks.<\/p>\n<h2>In Spanish, you should remember to put question mark not only at the end of the question but at the beginning as well.<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00bfQu\u00e9?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Refers to a noun which is yet unidentified or unknown. When we ask &#8220;Qu\u00e9&#8221; you are asking what thing?\u00a0 Examples:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfQu\u00e9 hay en la bolsa? (What is there in the bag?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>No s\u00e9 qu\u00e9 decir (I don\u00b4t know what to say)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfQu\u00e9 dia es hoy? (what day is today?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Qu\u00e9&#8221; as &#8220;what&#8221; can go with prepositions and you should know as we saw in the section of prepositions that they go at the beginning of the question unlike in English.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfDe qu\u00e9 quieres hablar? (What do you want to talk about?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfEn qu\u00e9 piensas?) (What are you thinking about?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">C\u00f3mo<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we ask &#8220;c\u00f3mo&#8221; we are asking &#8220;how&#8221;asking for an explanation to understand the way something is or &#8220;what\u00b4s like?&#8221; see a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfC\u00f3mo estas? (How are you?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfC\u00f3mo se dice &#8220;friend&#8221; en espa\u00f1ol? (How do you say friend in Spanish?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfC\u00f3mo es tu novia?
